JGC Group IT Meeting Held at MOC

Over the past decade, information technology (IT) has revolutionized the way corporate systems have been handled worldwide. In nearly all industries nowadays, IT offices almost single-handedly support technological services, secure confidential information, and protect valuable project outputs. Indeed, having a formidable IT system has become one of the foundations of an efficient, quality-based and productive company.

In its quest to become one of the world leaders in the EPC business, JGC Corporation held its JGC Group IT Meeting last February 18-19, 2010 here at its Manila Operations Center. It was attended by IT representatives from JGC’s Global Engineering Centers (GEC) and affiliates across borders, with Engineers from JGC Corporation Yokohama (JGC), JGC Gulf International (JGULF), JGC Indonesia (JIND), JGC Singapore (JSP), JGC Project Services Co., Ltd. (JPS), JGC Information Systems Co., Ltd. (JSYS), JGC Construction International Pte., Ltd. (J-CON), Technoserve Construction Company Inc., (TCCI),  J-SYS Philippines Inc., (JPI) and JGC Philippines, Inc. (JPHIL) collaborating to discuss current IT situations and action plans for year 2010. Each GEC and affiliate representative presented its IT Summary Status, including current manpower, software modifications employed and forecast of their systems development.

During their status report, Mr. Norio Tanji, JGC IT Department Manager, stressed improvement on project execution status coordination among its GEC’s. He also encouraged their IT counterparts to concentrate more on EPC activities and defined the functions and expectations from each IT Division. JGC also emphasized its continuous re-assessment and improvement on its Information Security Management System (ISMS, ISO 27001) with the issuance of JGC Group Information Security Policy. Possibilities to expand horizons were also discussed as our company will try to venture into new technologies, particularly on Remote Access (SSL-VPN) and Server Virtualization (Vmware and Xen).

The event saw the introduction of JGC’s new Enterprise Information Portal (EIP) dubbed as the J-GATE. It is an integrated IT platform designed to unify mailing, project correspondences, access logs and project databases into one system. It is suited for global operations, is highly secured and created to reduce IT infrastructure costs. The portal is already in use in JGC, however, due to the drastic changes that it will impact on JGC Philippines’ existing developed applications, concerns were being resolved on the utilization of the J-GATE. J-COTSI (JGC Correspondence Tracking System – Internal), a new project correspondence monitoring system devised to improve contractor and subcontractor interaction, was also briefly introduced.

Before concluding the two-day event, new engineering tools namely, SPF and SP3D were presented by Lead IT Engineer Marissa Balladares.  Her demonstration of the two systems on SPF for Engineering Information Management and SP3D on 3D modeling was honored with the presence of JGC Philippines Department Managers.  The JGC Group IT Meeting wrapped up with the immediate resolution of the difficulties at hand, with some issues scheduled to be resolved with the identified persons in-charge.

Convened since 2008, the annual JGC Group IT Meeting is primarily held with the main objective of strengthening the cooperation between IT sections of the JGC Group of Companies. It also serves as a venue to share challenges and plans between the GEC’s IT offices and to introduce JGC’s newly-developed systems to its member companies. JGC Philippines OIT Manager, Sherwin Turla and Lead IT Engineer Joel Carizo facilitated this year’s JGC Group IT Meeting.
